A Prayer for Wisdom in Treatment

Many times when we are physically ill, uncertainty exists as to the best course of action. Often, doctors are unsure of just how to help us. In these times, we can find direction, hope and answers when we go to God in prayer.

Consider the story of Naaman in 2 Kings 5. Naaman was the victorious commander of the Aramean army. Naaman also suffered from leprosy.

No one in the land knew just how to treat or cure leprosy, yet a young servant girl knew a man of God, the prophet Elisha, who could help. Elisha instructed Naaman to go and wash in the Jordan River seven times. Elisha told Naaman that his skin would be restored and that he would be healed of his leprosy.

The plan of treatment from Elisha was not at all what Naaman expected. It was so far off base in Naaman’s mind that he became enraged. Yet, when he finally yielded to the instruction from God, given through Elisha, the Bible tells us, “And his skin became as healthy as the skin of a young child’s, and he was healed!”

God can provide answers when we have none. James 5:14-15 says this, “Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.”

Like Naaman, we may not understand God’s plan for our medical treatment, but we can pray and ask God to give us wisdom and understanding with regard to this treatment. James 1:5 tells us, “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”

Dear Father in Heaven,

We ask that You would grant us wisdom with regard to the treatment of this illness. May Your hand guide the mind, heart, and physical movements of any and all people who would impact the outcome of _______________________.

May we be open, O Lord, to a new and different direction with regard to this treatment, if it is Your will.

Lord, we ask you to give us a clear sense of purpose and direction in this situation. We pray, as Paul prayed in Ephesians 1:18, that our hearts would be flooded with light so that we can understand the confident hope He has given to those He has called—His holy people who are His rich and glorious heritage.

We thank You and praise You for Your infinite love, mercy, grace, power and might.

We ask these things in Jesus name.

AMEN.
